Griffin enjoys life on the D-list

Basem Boshra, Canwest News Service

Consider for a moment what comedian and actress Kathy Griffin has accomplished in her career as of late - or, perhaps even more important, how she accomplished it.

Griffin - who will be hosting a Just for Laughs gala Thursday night at Montreal's Théâtre St. Denis - has taken her seemingly innate ability to take the piss out of celebrities, blended it with her own self-mockery of her standing in Hollywood, and has managed to transform herself into a bona-fide star. (If you need proof, consider that the latest season of her reality show My Life on the D-List recently scored the highest-ever ratings for the Bravo! cable channel in the United States.)

Griffin, 47, said her recently burgeoning success and that of her show are directly linked to our simultaneous obsession and revulsion with celebrity culture.

Kathy will fill in for Larry King on the 25th of July - Brooke Hogan cancelled after discovering this.

Pregnant Nic papped with fag

IT'S not often KERRY KATONA has anything in common with Hollywood stars, but she shares at least one bad habit with NICOLE RICHIE.

The Simple Life star has been spotted puffing away on a cigarette, despite being SEVEN months pregnant with her first child.

She has allegedly been seen lighting up several times outside various Beverly Hills restaurants over the past few weeks.

A source, who claims to have spotted the star having a sly puff earlier this month, told the New York Post newspaper: "I saw Nicole come out of DaSilvano with a girlfriend and a middle aged lady. She looked around at the outdoor tables, like she was checking to see who was there, and then lit up.

"They drove off in a black Cadillac Escalade and Nicole was still smoking."

This follows sightings of former Atomic Kitten star Kerry lighting up ciggies during her troubled pregnancy.

Pregnant mothers are advised not to smoke as it can harm the unborn baby.

However, unfortunately it appears a few of the A and Z-list's of this world choose to ignore this warning.

A bit of rough and tumble

Sean Bean says yes to streaking buck-naked across the Arctic tundra for his new film – and a defiant no to those so-hurtful Sienna Miller rumours

Sean Bean

Sean Bean has played plenty of craggy survivors, but none as needy as Loki, a Russian mercenary lost on the Arctic tundra in Asif Kapadia’s marvellous thriller, Far North. The native woman who scrapes him off the ice ends up sharing this blistered stranger with her daughter, setting in motion a shocking drama about sexual jealousy.

We meet amid tabloid stories about an intimacy with Sienna Miller – his co-star in A Woman of No Importance, due for release next year. These have really stung the actor. So much so that Bean pulls me aside from the ruck of journalists – ostensibly here to grill him about how wonderful it is to be him – to express his dismay. “None of the stories are true,” he says. “They’re all lies. Damaging and hurtful lies.”
